Welcome back to the Atari 8-bit world of computing!

The powerful Atari 400 set a new standard of capability with its release in 1979, and along with its subsequent models, has been loved by gamers and computer enthusiasts for decades.

The 400 Mini is a half-sized version of the distinctively styled Atari 400, emulating the whole 8-bit Atari range from the 400 to the 130XE, and the Atari 5200 home console. Also included is the CXStick, a recreation of the classic Atari CX40 joystick, with an additional seven seamlessly integrated function buttons and USB-A connectivity.

Play one of the 25 built-in games, including: Lee, Berzerk, Millipede, Miner 2049er, M.U.L.E, and Star Raiders II. Save your progress at any point in one of four save slots per game, or even pause and rewind gameplay to help you through the most difficult parts — a feature new to the 400 Mini. Play your own compatible games via a USB flash drive.

Relived my old Computer role playing game fun. It will play old multi-disk CRPG titles like the Dunjonquest series or Ultimas, all you need is a small inexpensive USB keyboard (stay away from the backlit ones that may draw too much power), the firmware update which is easy, and a USB key for the games you want to add of course.

A bit baffling, this product. The main thing it brings to the table is its form factor. The emulation is a bit lackluster. The games it’s included with all work great though, the fun begins when you plug in a USB.

The 5200 support is half way. The product comes with a microswitch joystick. A 5200 game is not really expecting the inputs from the provided stick. I wish they’d sell a 5200 controller, but I’m not sure I’d buy one since the original experience I had with an actual 5200 console in the late 1980’s wasn’t great either. The 5200 controller was good for centipede type games and not so much for maze games.

There are actual modern Atari products on the market, I’m not sure why the most common USB-to-DB9 controller adapters aren’t supported.

You’re better off getting yourself a raspberry pi or a mini PC, unless you want this tchochke under your TV. Anyone who played video games in the 1980’s will know what it is.
