Completely Took Me By Surprise!

Any Atari fan worth their salt knows the name "Yars' Revenge" and fewer still actually know what the game actually is, meaning what you, Yar, the fly, are doing, and why you even wanted revenge in the first place. Am I getting too in depth for a game that came out before I was born? Possibly. Anyhow, back to this game; when I first installed it, I thought I had made a mistake initially, and was feeling a little let down. It seemed like a typical side scroller, "Metroidvania", a bit on the kiddie side of game design. Bright neon colors, some over the top voice acting, some songs that I didn't enjoy playing in the background, I just wasn't having a good time, but...I couldn't stop playing it. I kept thinking to myself "Man...this is really boring. I don't like it." But I kept playing, and then I was humming the songs...and then I was laughing at the characters joking with each other, and then I started LIKING the writing, and then, to my surprise, the game took a HUGE difficulty spike! Spoiler territory from here on out: A couple hours into the game depending on how you play, it all turns into aliens, and bio hacking. Man, I was hooked! For clarification, I'm a 32 year old man, and I'm sitting here talking to my wife telling her that I hope Yar just tells Anthony she has a crush on him already while I'm blasting away at these robots and slugs! And don't even get me started on the stupid Black Widow fight! I completely forgot about the grasshopper legs and ended up dying way more than I'll admit here. Suffice it to say...I haven't played a game that made me feel like I was a kid since I was a kid, and I can't believe that it took a game about a girl working for a shady corporation, who wanted to make some money, who got visited by an alien, who hacks computers by playing an old Atari game from 1982 to do it. Oh yeah, you play a little Yars' Revenge mini game every time you hack a computer console, so that's a great touch. I can't recommend this game enough. Seriously. Oh, and the music? It will never, ever, EVER, leave your head. I have been perpetually humming "human connection hacking my brain" for days and I don't regret it one bit. If anyone at Atari is reading this, team up with WayForward make a vinyl of the soundtrack, will ya?

Years Rising, the next chapter.

Didn't realize this was the next chapter in this exciting game. Atari, keep restoring nostalgia.
