The powerful Atari 400 set a new standard of capability with its release in 1979, and along with its subsequent models, has been loved by gamers and computer enthusiasts for decades.

The 400 Mini is a half-sized version of the distinctively styled Atari 400, emulating the whole 8-bit Atari range from the 400 to the 130XE, and the Atari 5200 home console. Also included is the CXStick, a recreation of the classic Atari CX40 joystick, with an additional seven seamlessly integrated function buttons and USB-A connectivity.


Play one of the 25 built-in games, including: Lee, Berzerk, Millipede, Miner 2049er, M.U.L.E, and Star Raiders II. Save your progress at any point in one of four save slots per game, or even pause and rewind gameplay to help you through the most difficult parts — a feature new to the 400 Mini. Play your own compatible games via a USB flash drive.

Good idea, mostly fun, not without ongoing problems

I was so excited to find both MULE and Seven Cities of Gold on the 400 Mini, mostly the former to which I was addicted in the 80s. And it plays reasonably well, but the emulation translation is poor in a few ways- the top 2 being (1) Flappers are supposed to have a $600 starting bonus and in this emulation only get $400. (2) Far worse than that, attempts to catch the wampus which was flawless in the original game and every PC emulation I’ve ever run comes with a 50-50 chance of CRASHING THE ENTIRE GAME on the 400 Mini. So- three stars out of 5 right now. If you’re interested in MULE particularly, that’s as generous as it gets for now. If they fixed those emulation issues or if you don’t care for MULE in the first place, a charitable nudge up to four stars would be easier to give.

Oh- the cables that come with the unit are also garbage. The HDMI cable will need to be replaced because of bad, cheap terminals shortly after you buy the game. The charging cable is NOT a standard USB-C and Atari doesn’t actually tell you WHAT it is, so it becomes the most crucial piece of the package to protect with your life. I’d at least expect a slightly more durable quality of cabling for this price.

It looks great right out of the box. The mini version of the Atari 400 has that same classic design, just shrunk down. It’s light, solid, and looks cool sitting next to other retro systems. You’re not typing on it like a real computer, but that’s fine — this thing is more about playing games than pretending it’s 1981.
